My gummy smile had always been a concern for me since people around me would make fun of how big and wide my smile was. I had braces twice before and it never helped solve my problems. When I found out about orthognathic surgery, I was more than eager to learn more. Not to mention, I was already wearing braces for the third time when I found out about the procedures. Therefore, Dr. Hsieh and my orthodontist had to cooperate together in order to successfully create my new, beautiful smile. Dr. Hsieh was very thorough in explaining what the procedure was and how it would affect my jaws and he was also more than willing to communicate with my orthodontist step by step as to what he would do to my jaw and how that would affect my overall bite.
At first I was extremely nervous about the procedure, as I had learned that I would have trouble eating and trying to rehabilitate my jaws since they had to be readjusted. However, what I wanted more than anything was to fix my smile that everyone made fun of. After I woke up from the surgery, I realized that I did it. I went through with the procedure and now I can have a gorgeous smile I've always been jealous of other people having. However, the recovery and rehabilitation was not easy. I was only able to consume liquids through a syringe and I was constantly hungry. I struggled with trying to keep the liquids down, as my mouth was numb so I barely had control. After I began eating soft foods, it wasn't any easier but at least I wasn't as hungry. Jaw exercises were necessary everyday for my jaws to recover to how it was normally. As I religiously did the exercises, my jaws were beginning to function normally. Now my jaw, chin structure, and smile are absolutely wonderful, and all mine.
