"Lip cold and tooth death", many clinical treatments performed by dentists will significantly affect the aesthetics of the lips. For example, prosthetic dentures, dental crowns, orthodontic treatment or orthognathic surgery change the shape, position and angle of the alveolar bones and teeth, and also change the appearance and function of the lips. In fact, many hard-tissue palatal facial problems or diagnoses can be traced to the soft-tissue lips. This report discusses how clinical "vertical" changes in bite and facial shape affect the function and appearance of soft tissue (lips), and how to diagnose it? And consider the joint treatment of orthognathic surgery and orthognathic surgery to improve the position, shape and function of the patient's lips to achieve long-term and stable treatment results.

Many patients receive orthodontic treatment because of dentition disorders. However, dentition disorders are often caused by abnormal development of the upper and lower jaw bones. Usually, abnormal development of the jaw bone is also accompanied by compensation of other bones in the craniofacial region. Common facial appearance problems such as a sunken midface can even affect the respiratory tract and cause sleep apnea. Dr. Hsieh shared that for this type of patients, the patient’s treatment plan can be comprehensively planned through other surgeries in addition to orthognathic surgery.

Functional assessment of orthognathic surgery and orthodontic treatment Although the vast majority of patients seek orthognathic surgery or receive orthodontic treatment due to facial shape and bite problems, some patients require orthognathic surgery due to other functional problems, including temporomandibular joint disorder or sleep apnea. For patients with abnormal development of the mandible, such as skewness, due to the different forces on the temporomandibular joints on both sides, the temporomandibular joints on one side will be severely worn, so undergoing orthognathic surgery to equalize the forces on both sides of the temporomandibular joints, and further targeting the temporomandibular joints, is the best treatment recommendation. In addition, patients with excessively retracted mandibles may have a narrowed airway when sleeping while lying down, leading to snoring or obstructive sleep apnea. Orthognathic surgery can also widen the upper airway by rotating the mandible forward. These two are the biggest functional considerations.
